How does depoldering work?
With the process of depoldering, we return the polder to the river. This way the river has more room for flooding and, at the same time, tidal nature develops.
First, we build a new levee further inland. Then we create breaches in the old levee, allowing the tides to flow in and out of the area. This is how tidal nature, with mudflats and marshes, develops in the depoldered area. At the same time, the force that the water exerts on the levees is tempered, reducing the likelihood of floods further inland.
